The schoolies are in full force in Rhode Island. Last night was another episode of spring schoolie madness. They were hitting every other cast like clockwork. The fish on average were about a foot long, with the occasional 18incher or so. This time I used a fly teaser, which produced 4 sets of Schoolie Duelies.
The best lures to use for these guys are 3-4inch cocahoe minnows & zoom flukes on 1/4 – 1/2 oz bucktails or jigheads. Yesterday I was using a 1 oz bucktail on the bottom with a small fly teaser on top both tipped with zoom flukes. Normally I would go with a smaller / lighter bucktail, but it was a windy day, and I only had my 9ft surf-rod spooled with 30lb braid setup, so I needed to get the jig far enough out there.
There’s plenty of schoolie action to be had in Rhode Island right now, so if you haven’t gotten your fix yet, get out there asap!
